When we first received B Corp Certification in 2019, we made a commitment to hold ourselves accountable to the B Corp standards and to continuously learn and look for ways to improve our organization. Six years on, our latest B Corp recertification shows what we’re seeing at Cathexis: we’ve come a long way in our efforts to make our organization a responsible company that’s a great place to work.
Each time a business recertifies as a B Corp, they must complete the B Impact Assessment. The assessment is administered by B Lab (the global non-profit that stewards the B Corp community), and has been developed in consultation with B Corps around the world. The current assessment sets out five areas within which businesses must provide evidence for how they are measuring, managing, and working to improve: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.
According to B Lab, the average score for a “typical” (non-B Corp) business is around 50.9. To achieve a B Corp Certification, a company must have a minimum score of 80.
Cathexis completed our first assessment in 2019 with a score of 99.9, marking the start of our B Corp Certification. Since then, we have worked to improve our score by making tangible changes to how we operate. When we recertified in 2022, our score increased to 118.6.
Now, in 2025, we have increased our score by 13.1 points to 131.7. What have we done to get to where we are today?
- Governance: Our score increased to 18.1 thanks to formal commitments outlined in our Reconciliation Action Plan and environmental considerations in our KPIs
- Workers: We boosted our score to 42 by implementing an Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP), offering company-paid health and dental benefits, and introducing a parental leave top-up.
- Environment: We nearly doubled our previous score to 11.7 through several actions, including:
- Company wide learning efforts
- An updated Environmental Policy
- Regular monitoring and measurement of our emissions
- A commitment to carbon offsets
Using the B Impact Assessment as a guide has provided us with both direction and a practical framework to identify where we’re doing well and where we can improve. As we reflect on how far we’ve come and look ahead to where we can go, we see so much potential to deepen our impact and continue being a force for good.
